Rana Salem | Law Clerk

Rana Salem

Rana is a first-generation student at Chicago-Kent College of Law. She is a daughter of two Egyptian immigrants and can speak Arabic proficiently. She can also speak Spanish at a professional level. She was born and raised just outside of Chicago and spent most of her life traveling to and from the city; she now calls the Pilsen neighborhood home. Rana grew up with entrepreneurs in her family and found it fascinating to watch and help them build from the ground up.

Before law school, Rana received her BA in Economics from the University of Illinois at Chicago then took on a manager position at a local healthcare start-up. There, she learned more about what it really takes to start a business. Rana was in charge of hiring, training, scheduling, and managing over 70 employees. She also helped ensure the company was acting in compliance with the state’s Department of Health regulations. Because of her scheduling efforts and keen eye for talent, Rana was able to staff so well it provided the highest sales week in the company’s short history.

At Chicago-Kent, Rana is in her second year and loves staying busy. In addition to working with us at Sentient Law, she is a part-time student associate with the school’s Career Services Office, is a captain on the school’s Trial Advocacy team (notably ranked 4th in the nation), is president of the Corporate Law Society, and recently completed a judicial externship with the Honorable Judge Alison C. Conlon in Cook County’s Chancery Court. This past summer, she interned with UBS Asset Management through the Association of Corporate Counsel. In this role, Rana worked alongside in-house counsel and was exposed to investment fund and security law; she learned about many things including hedge fund formation (drafting and reviewing offering memorandums and SEC compliance research), registered funds (especially reviewing subadvisor agreements and shareholder letters), ISDA agreements and negotiations, and even explored how the SEC defines a security to determine whether specific crypto assets may be regulated by the agency.

After law school, Rana hopes to practice transactional law either at a firm helping companies negotiate, draft agreements, and expand their businesses, or working directly with entrepreneurs to help them bring their dreams to life. For these reasons, she is so excited to be clerking with Sentient Law.
